I recently had my wisdom tooth removed, and the experience exceeded my expectations in every way! From the initial consultation to the procedure itself, the entire team was professional, caring, and attentive.
Dr. Akel explained everything clearly, addressing all my concerns and making me feel at ease.I was pleasantly surprised by how quick and efficient the whole procedure was. The anesthesia worked perfec and I felt no pain during the extraction.
Recovery has been smooth as well. The post-procedure care instructions were straightforward, and I appreciated the follow-up call to check on my progress. I experienced minimal discomfort, and the swelling was manageable.
Overall, I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. I highly recommend Family Dental Care, Dr. Akel, and his team for anyone needing any dental work. Their expertise and compassion made my experience stress-free and a 10/10!

Today I had the worst experience I’ve ever had at any dental office. Before making my appointment I call to make sure that they are in network with both my primary insurance and secondary Insurance because I know I needed some minor fillings done and a crown repaired. After some back and forth with the one of the ladies that work the phones there and being told YES they take both my insurances I make the appointment. I arrived today, initially the front desk representative was kind upon my arrival, took all my needed Information including secondary insurance information and proceeded to check me in. The wait wasn’t long, after about 30 minutes I get called into the back, again the dentist hygienist was very nice, welcoming and kind. She takes my X-rays, we go over my concerns, she does my cleaning. The doctor comes in and goes over my X-rays with, confirming the work that needs to be done, and then tells me about the dental treatment plan. Okay cool, this is where things go left. Inform him I have two Insurances so I’m looking to start dental treatment today. He then begins to tell me that my secondary insurance doesn’t provide coverage at all for any dental work (which is inaccurate), and that they do not bill secondary insurances because it’s illegal, even tho they are in network. Even after calling my secondary insurance and having a representative speak to them to Inform them they are wrong and can absolutely submit a claim to them after they bill my primary insurance, (two different insurance companies) the doctor tells them no, he’s not doing that. He wanted me to pay out of pocket the balance after my primary insurance is billed. I go back and forth with the office staff for about ten minutes while still on the phone with my secondary insurance and decide, I’m just going to make the appointment and come back to finish the dental work when I get paid. Speaking back to the lady at the front desk that checked me in, now has a whole attitude about everything. I inquiry about three different appointment times, two wasn’t available, the third one was, okay cool. I asked to be scheduled for that day and time only for her to excuse herself for 30 seconds and then come back and tell me the next availability isn’t until March. How was I just about to book an appt on Feb 3rd at 4pm if it’s no longer available 30 seconds after you getting up and walking away. Talk about being played with In your face. I politely told them off and told them I would be filing a complaint against them with the insurance company and making a review. The icing on the cake is when I get home, about an hour and half later I get a text from them confirming the appt I tired to make for the 3rd of February in office but was told all of February was completely booked. After all of that, I wouldn’t even feel comfortable with them people in my mouth. But when I say this was by far the worst experience I’ve ever had with at a dental office, I left in tears because I was that upset knowingly knowing that these people are trying to get over and scam people. This is the office that I went to when I was younger, I had a cavity that got progressively worse deep within the gum behind my wisdom tooth, to the point where I would experience unbearably excruciating pain if I moved my mouth even just a little bit, I was raised in a low-income family and since Dr. Rufus Joseph was was the assigned doctor under the Medicaid plan I had, which is now called Simply Healthcare; my mom brought me to the dentist who worked in the same building since they accepted the Medicaid plan.
The dentist put a tooth extraction tool in my mouth and with all his arm strength was pulling my fully grown wisdom tooth (not wiggling at all) with no general anesthesia (no local anesthesia), no sedation, NOTHING AT ALL. Tears were flowing down my eyes and I was experiencing the worst pain I had ever had to deal with before he tried to pull it out and of course DURING, I actually thought I was going to die for a moment when I thought he wouldn’t stop cause he started twisting the tool when the tooth wasn’t budging. He stopped after it looked like I going to pass out from the pain cause my body froze in shock, he didn’t stop from my tears or horror and distressed look on my face when I was trying to move his hand, but only when I froze; his words were - “It’s already almost halfway out.” I ran out of the office and into my mom’s van since it unlocked, I locked all the doors, my mom and the staff in the office saw when I ran passed them and eventually I my mom wanted to know but I could barely talk crying…trying to let them know what happened…they understood, but can you imagine?…. I shake my head just thinking about it. My mom is from Haiti and English was not her native language but eventually everyone was trying to figure out why he would try to extract my tooth with nothing to numb it…the result was because they never gave my mom the forms to sign for local anesthesia and since the dentist didn't receive the forms he ‘assumed we refused the local anesthesia / used to numb the tooth before extraction. To this day, the memory haunts me. Seeing him walk to the front of the office to speak to the staff while I just experienced the most horrific thing in my life because of him & of course no legal action was taken, my mom signed the forms and I had to go back in to complete the process with local anesthesia, fully awake, under his hand ….again. & to this day I wonder if it was really because of the color of my skin and discrimination…because why would the dentist not question the staff about that, when he noticed it, & I was just a little girl. Disgusting thought. Whenever I tell the story people are always shocked to the point where they are speechless for a moment and just looking at me with intense shock and disgust. Even the building alone is disturbing to pass by. Can’t remember the dentist name (but it looks exactly like the guy standing in the full-body picture with the glasses, giving the side smile, that the business posted) and I’m in my 20’s now but who would be able to forget that experience? No matter how many years passed.
